5000 Series Undersea Pump Module Offers Twice the Power of Previous Generation Pumps
San Jose, California and Glasgow, September 26, 2005
– JDSU today announced the qualification of its 5000 Series Undersea
Pump Module, offering optical power up to 400 mW and performance that
exceeds Telcordia standards to meet the requirements for undersea
deployment. A unique combination of the latest generation of proven
chip technology and a proven packaging technology, the 5000 Series
Undersea Pump was developed in response to the accelerating adoption of
broadband services and the correlating high bit-rate environments at
the long-haul and ultra long-haul levels. The product will be on
display at ECOC 2005 in Glasgow, September 26-29, booth 85.
Core networks, including undersea cables, are supporting strong
traffic increases resulting from widespread deployment of broadband
access technologies. Network operators are challenged by the need to
reduce operating expenses while also adding new revenue-generating
services and increased performance. Subjected to multiple aging life
tests during the qualification process, as well as stringent in-process
screening (also known as “pedigree review”) to certify for undersea
deployment, the 5000 Series is able to help manufacturers of undersea
cabling equipment meet these emerging demands.
“Demand for consumer and business broadband services is prompting
operators to expand the capacity and performance of their networks
through increased investment in new systems,” said Julian Rawle, Senior
Market Analyst for Pioneer Consulting (www.pioneerconsulting.com),
a market research firm specializing in submarine fiber optics. “A high
power, highly reliable 980 nm pump is therefore a critical component
for suppliers of undersea communications systems. JDSU has a product
with a proven track record that can help system suppliers successfully
respond to the demands for reliability associated with an undersea
environment.”
“Our Congratulations to JDSU for their innovative approach,” said
Seymour Shapiro, VP R&D of Tyco Telecommunications. “JDSU has
taken proven, deployed packaging technology and successfully integrated
it with its laser diode chip, creating a high power undersea pump
capability that offers a cost-effective solution for network operators.”
The JDSU 5000 Series Undersea Pump Module is manufactured by highly
skilled, trained and certified personnel in a U.S.-based pump module
manufacturing facility that has produced the majority of the world’s
980 nm pump modules. The facility has been extensively audited and the
5000 Series also undergoes continuing surveillance to ensure
manufacturing stability.
About JDSU’s 5000 Series Undersea Pump Module
The JDSU Series 5000 Undersea Pump Module is a combination of
previously proven undersea technologies, the JDSU 6500 series 980 nm
laser diode and the JDSU undersea pump module package. Both
technologies have more than one billion device hours of undersea field
operation without a reported failure.
JDSU has the world’s largest database of undersea 980 nm lifetest
data (6500 series 980 nm laser diode) and the undersea pump module
package has been deployed successfully in undersea systems since 1998.
In addition, as the integrated manufacturer of the laser diode chip
and module package, JDSU ensures optimal specification matching,
integrated supply chain planning for efficiently-timed management, and
an industry-leading cost structure.
